Careers with Heart

Our People are the Heart of Southwest Airlines. Text here about how all Employees have a story.
Title
I joined Southwest in 2005, shortly after a commuter airline I worked for shut down. Before that, I flight instructed in the Chicago suburbs for 2 years. It was the typical trajectory for a civilian pilot during the late 90s and early 2000s, and pretty much the only one I was aware of at the time. I would tell my younger self to let go of all the anxiety in flight school, focus on learning and being a student. The repetition will come and with that, progress. All the tools will start to fall into place with time, practice, and continuing to learn, that should never stop.

The easiest days on the job are flying with a crew that’s in sync, we’re running on time, and it’s almost effortless to get to the gate. The best days add stories of some amazing passengers and crew members I have had the honor to meet, including WWII Vets, Wasps, Tuskegee Airman, and also other crew members and their stories of prior careers to Southwest.

There are certainly long difficult days as well, usually involving weather or maintenance delays or reroutes. An exhausted group of 5 or 6 rolling into a hotel at 3am after a 14-15 hr day is hard. As a female Asian pilot I have fond memories of being welcomed at Southwest. When I was first hired I had the pleasure of meeting both Herb and Colleen, they greeted me with a hug, a kiss and “We’re really happy to see you here”. It’s been an amazing experience and Southwest has cultivated my growth in everything aviation, but also personally through interactions with all Southwest employees. I was hired in the aftermaths of 9/11, so there were definitely some “teachable moments.” I think that’s probably true for everyone in life. If you meet those moments with grace and the intent to inform, you’ll know that you carried on with the respect you would bestow on anyone.

This also happens to be SWA’s “golden rule,” these moments will define your character more than someone else’s. Southwest has had my gratitude and dedication from the moment I arrived. The leadership has given me and my family support during the times I needed it, without question. I would tell anyone interested in Southwest that its a great place to work because of the people.

Your coworkers will become friends and some even feel like family. The growth we expect in the years to come is unprecedented and being part of a company that puts its employees first is a combination for a successful career. The next generation of pilots that join us will find an environment of support, fun, and luv.
